Technology Learning Center, Mississippi
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, The Natural Playgrounds Company donated the design for an outdoor classroom and play area at the University of Southern Mississippi's?Technology Learning Center which serves people with handicaps. The 12,000 square foot, two level site had 5 large oak trees which survived the hurricane, but not much else survived.
The concept behind the unique, innovative design was that people using wheelchairs should be able to experience the natural environment at their level, so our new company, the Natural Playgrounds Construction Company, essentially lifted half the site using our patented flexible wall system so that the animal play table, the extensive, meandering stream and water play table with its moss garden, the giant sand play table, the sensory and loose parts tables, and the pond are all raised.
On the upper level, we created a water play patio so people can cool off in the hot summer months, an art and game patio, and an accessible slide, all of which are separated by winding raised beds filled with tall grasses and flowers. Around the central giant oak tree, we built an observation deck overlooking the Gulf Coast and featuring a cascading waterfall that feeds a raised pool containing fish and turtles
